Having a Disability Should Not Prevent You From Being Employed

Many people are born with or acquire disabilities over the course of their lives. This does not stop them from being productive members of society and being able to fill roles within any work environment. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was created in 1990 to reinforce this idea and to help define what a disability is and what remedies can be taken to ensure that a disabled person can do his or her job.

Having a disability in the workplace is not insurmountable. Employers are expected to make reasonable accommodation for disabled workers. This may be as simple as rearranging office furniture so that a person in a wheelchair can get around easily or as complicated as having special equipment on hand to allow a person to accurately and correctly perform his or her duties.

Many employers either decide that they don't want to accommodate disabled people, so they never hire them, or refuse to make the necessary adjustments to allow a person with a disability to work within their system. This is discrimination and must be fought.
